As you know the best advertising for OLOL comes from you. Happy parents and positive chatter in parks, at hairdressers, in the pub, over the fence, in cafes is the most effective and strongest form of marketing. OLOL's recent build is supported by a superb staff, contemporary facilities and a strategic marketing plan but it has been word of mouth that has brought us year after year of new families to join us. I am very grateful and ask that you continue to get the word out there that OLOL is really a very special place for a child's primary education.
Classes and Structure for 2022
As we move with lightning speed toward the end of the year, teachers inhabit two worlds. The ‘now’ where we are teaching, assessing and reporting, and the ‘next year’ where we begin planning to give each child the best possible start to 2022.
We have just finished allocating students to their 2022 classrooms and teachers.
Where a child is in a class that is split between 2 or 3 teachers we take great pains and many hours to make sure that, the students are allocated to environments that are conducive to both their well-being and their learning. We take many things into account including:
- The children all choose five friends that they would like to be with and we make sure they have at least one and sometimes two 'chosen friends'
- We look at the teachers they have had previously, and although we like to change teachers so the students get to experience multiple teaching styles and relationships, it is sometimes in the child's interests that the child retain the same teacher.
- We endeavour to ensure our classrooms are as balanced as we can in the following areas:
- gender
- academic needs
- social and emotional needs
- year levels.
As you can appreciate, this is no small task but the proof of our deliberations is shown in the successful learning program we are running at OLOL.
So to 2022 the following structures and teachers will be in place at OLOL:
3 x Prep/1 classes with Eimear Ross, Tanya Murphy and Jamie Jackson
1 x Year 2 class with Daniel Podbury
2 x Year 3/4 classes with Irene Archer and Tom Venier
1 x Year 5 class with Alison March
1 x Year 6 class with Adrian Costa
The philosophy that has been driving the literacy and maths curriculums in this school for the last eight years is one of flexible learning. This is ensuring that all of the students at OLOL are improving at or above our expectations. Flexible Learning (also called Point of Need learning) at OLOL is when the students move to the teacher that is addressing your child’s learning need rather than staying with their designated classroom teacher at all times.
Later in the year, students will meet their new teachers and classmates.
Thank you all for your continued support,
Francine
Thank you Miss Gabriel for coming to OLOL in the first place and for leaving it a better place as you go. God Bless you in all your future career choices and opportunities.
Also moving on from OLOL is our cherished ESO Bhavika Singh. Bhavika and her family are moving to QLD so it makes the commute to school just that bit too long. Bhavika leaves a legacy of professionalism, can-do attitude, compassion, flexibility, and above all else her shared spirituality. Bhavika freely shared her Hindu faith with us and we are all the richer for it. She also regularly shared her cooking talents with us too and we are all the heavier for it!!
BUT before we get too sad, we also take this opportunity to welcome:
Tanya Murphy (Prep/One team), Miss Bernie (Music and Performing Arts), Tom Venier (Year 3/4), Estelle Gaillard (French Language Program Leader) and Tracey French (Classroom ESO).
If that seems like a lot of new teachers - it is! As the school is growing in numbers it means that we add a new class next year. This in turn means that all our specialist programs will take a day and a half rather than or previous day. This means Miss Vivarelli will only be taking Art next year and Mrs McCleary will continue to take PE but will add STEMs to her teaching load. We also add our French Program next year and an extra classroom role.
While we set about beginning the process of adding a new classroom to OLOL, next year we will be using the Library as our eighth classroom. It is a very large space and we will be able to calve off a 'Library' space and a classroom space - so rest assured all classes will continue to have timetabled library time.
The Fee and Levy structure for 2022 school year is determined in consultation with the School Advisory Committee and our School MACS Business Manager. We have made some minor changes in 2022 to both simplify and better reflect the operations of our school. These include a Capital Fee (an amalgamation of the school improvement and maintenance levy) and a Technology Support Levy (renaming of the computer levy).
The 2022 School fees will be as follows:
Family Fee (per family) | 2022 Fees |
Family Fee - 1 child | $2,788.00 |
Family Fee - 2 children | $2,956.00 |
Family Fee - 3 children | $3,123.00 |
Family Fee - 4 children | $3,289.00 |
Capital Fee (per family) | $390.00 |
Student Levy (per student) | 2022 Fees |
Curriculum Levy including Book List | $505.00 |
Technology Support Levy - one child | $150.00 |
Technology Support Levy - additional child | $50.00 |
Sports & Excursion Levy (Yr 3 - Yr 6) | $402.00 |
Sports & Excursion Levy (Prep - Yr 2) | $258.00 |
Camp Fees (Yr 3 - 6) | To be advised |
We are committed to supporting our families and offer a range of payment options to assist families in meeting their obligation of paying fees. If you have any concerns about the payment of fees, please reach out to Francine Walsh for a confidential discussion to explore financial support arrangements or government concessions to help you.

In the coming weeks, the Victorian Parliament will vote on legislation that will affect religious freedom and the independence, integrity, and ethos of Catholic organisations like our school.
Under current laws, Catholic organisations – along with other Christian, Jewish, Islamic and all faith-based educational establishments – have the right to choose to hire employees who are dedicated to upholding their religious identity.
The proposed Equal Opportunity (Religious Exceptions) Amendment Bill 2021 will seriously diminish the rights of religious organisations to manage their activities according to their faith and conscience.
The Bill puts forward measures that replace the current, well-working approach, which will mean Catholic organisations have to prove that staffing positions have an ‘inherent’ religious requirement if challenged.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne is working with its agencies in asking the state government to reconsider the Bill and abandon the proposal to introduce an inherent requirement test.
We as a catholic school community need to play our part in this debate. If this is important to you. as it is to me, I ask that you take the time to write to your state and/or federal member of parliament. In this section we have linked some template letters for you to use or adapt. (state members of parliament and federal members of parliament)
I have also shared Archbishop Peter’s letter and a fact sheet so you understand why this is an important issue for us in Catholic schools.
Just a heads up that on Friday 10th December we will be having a Christmas dress up day to celebrate the end of our school year.
More details will follow from your SRC and school leaders, but for now start getting those Christmas costumes ready!
The money raised from donations will be sent to our chosen Christmas Charity.
HO HO HO!
Mr Costa and Miss Gabriel
An ex OLOL family have donated two guitars for us to give to good homes. If you are interested, please contact the office.
