- End of Term 2
And so we arrive at the end of another busy term. I hope you were as impressed with your children's semester reports as I was - not to mention the fact that we also went digital! Thank you to those parents who were able to come in and see the Classroom Expos. The examples of learning were impressive and I am grateful to the staff for ensuring the students learning was displayed and presented for you to peruse. It was a busy term with Cross-country training and carnivals, school photos, the Resilience Project parent information evening, the super successful election sausage sizzle and cake stall, our Mothers Day liturgy, the fabulous and fun Walkathon, a book fair, a new newsletter, First Reconciliation, the Eucharist Commitment Mass, Earn and Learn collection, 'Beauty and the Beast' cast and rehearsals begun - and that is seriously just some of the events that have taken place in the last ten weeks - no WONDER we are all exhausted! Still, as Thomas Carlyle said I'd prefer to die of exhaustion than boredom.
Have a wonderful Term Break, stay warm and we'll see you all on Monday 15th July.
Thank you for your support.
Francine
Football Lightning Premiership
On Friday 21st June a group of 4, 5 and 6 students braved the Arctic conditions and headed out to Caulfield Park for the 2019 Football Lightning Premiership. St. Kevins was lucky enough to join the mighty OLOL team as they were low on numbers. All the students did a mighty job and did the guernsey proud. We played a round robin tournament and gave it a red hot crack. There were some impressive specky’s and great team work throughout the tournament and as the tournament went on the team got better and better. All students who were involved should be mighty proud as they showed great resilience playing through the horrible weather.
Sacramental Information Evening
On Thursday 8th August we will be holding our Sacramental Information Evening for any children and their parents who will be making their First Eucharist this year. The evening will be led by Maria Forde, a great and informative presenter who ensures the evening is both children and parent friendly. If you are unable to arrange for someone to care for siblings for the evening there will be a movie available for them to watch so that the Eucharist children and parents do not miss out on such an important evening. The session will be held in the School Hall and will begin at 7pm. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
Thank you for your attendance at our Term 2 Whole School Mass. Congratulations to our First Eucharist children and their families who made a commitment to their faith on Sunday. We look forward to celebrating their First Eucharist at our Term 3 Whole School Mass on Sunday 25th August.
You will read in Ruth McGurk's politely worded section on costumes how we as a school are hiring many of this year's costumes for our play.
This means that parents do not have to go to the effort or expense of making or finding very specific costume requirements. Many of you will need to provide however some basics for your child so that the hired elements merge seamlessly into fabulous consistent and breathtakingly impressive scenes.
Ruth and Anne have gone to enormous amounts of effort to get your elements of the costumes out to you before the holidays so that 'wintery' items such as stockings are still available and in shops. All the items we are asking you to provide are very low in cost and things that your children can reuse such as leggings.
All this being said... PLEASE make sure you do provide your child with this very low-end requirement and keep in mind that - Black IS NOT navy. Long sleeved IS NOT short sleeved. Plain Black top IS NOT logo-ridden grey hoodie.
I am aware that this is a bit of a rant but we ask that you 'get onto' your child's costume requirements well before the dress rehearsal cut off dates. Thank you.
Beauty and the Beast - Parent Correspondence #1 - from Ruth McGurk
Hello OLOL Parents and welcome to the first update for our school production in 2019!
REHEARSALS
Music rehearsals are already underway and students are working very hard in their classroom or with me to learn their songs. In Term Three we will begin to stage the scenes and choreograph the dancing. This will happen during school hours on a Tuesday or Thursday.
All lead cast will need to have their lines learned by the start of Term Three to make the rehearsal process much easier and give them lots of time to feel confident before stepping onto the stage.
SAVE THE DATE
- Thursday, 12th of September - Dress rehearsals at Christian Brother’s College, St Kilda
Parents are asked to drop off and pick up their children from 11 Westbury Avenue on this day. More details will be given closer to the date.
- Friday, 13th of September - Matinee and Evening performance.
Parents, family and friends are welcome to attend one or both of the performances. A link for booking tickets will be sent home in early Term Three.
COSTUMES
This year, we are aiming to hire as many costumes as we can. As so many of the characters require something from a historical period (or a life-sized, wearable wardrobe in some cases!) this is the most convenient way to secure high-quality outfits.
All students will be required to supply a simple part of their costume and we need parents to provide the exact item, in the colour requested. Thank you in advance for your support! Your child’s costume requirements follow this item.
PROPS
Can you help us with some props? We need to borrow some items - but please nothing delicate or precious family heirlooms!
- Black/metal coloured hand-held lanterns x 3
- Big cardboard boxes (think washing machine size or similar)
- Baskets for our village scene (all shapes and sizes)
- Plastic fruit
If you have something that might fit the bill, please zip me a photo to rmcgurk@olprahraneast.catholic.edu.au
TICKETS
Tickets will be available online in early Term Three. Please do not approach the office to purchase these as the only place they can be bought will be via the web. Adults are $20 and students $10. Seats are unallocated, meaning on the night you can sit wherever you please. First in best-dressed!
Our students are already sounding fantastic. We look forward to getting our show ‘up on its feet’ in Term Three.
Kind regards,
Ruth McGurk and Anne Vella (Production Team)

The SRC has surveyed our students and they have decided that we need to spend our Earn and Learn points on some more large LEGO blocks, some more soft bricks for the Passive Play Area and some brand new sandpit toys for our brand new sandpit.
Our students have loved playing with the large LEGO blocks this week and made, an almost life-sized, giraffe. These blocks were purchased last year with the Earn and Learn stickers.
Expressions of Interest for Term 4, 2019
Please register your interest for your child to participate in the ‘Peaceful Kids’ program for Term 4, 2019. This program will continue to be facilitated by Angie Sloan from Masterminds Counselling angie@mastermindscounselling.com.au.
We ran Peaceful Kids this term and received such positive and valuable feedback from both the students and parents. Please see below feedback parents gave about their child participating in the program.
"Without a doubt one of the best programs a child could do. Peaceful Kids will have a positive impact on the rest of my child's life. I like everything. I can see a real transformation in my daughter. It's fantastic."
"The program has been so valuable. It was something we all looked forward to every week. Every parent and school should invest in this for our children. Thank you Angie"
Sts Joachim and Anne had been married for 20 years, but had not children. St Joachim pleaded with God to send them a child. After a period of fasting and prayer, an angel appeared to St Joachim and told him that his wife would give birth to a child whom they should call Mary and dedicate to God. St. Joachim is the Patron Saint of fathers, grandfathers, grandparents, married couples, cabinet makers and linen traders. St. Anne is the patron saint of Christian mothers and of women in labour.
To celebrate this special day we are inviting any Grandparents or special people in your child's life to attend this special morning. The morning will begin at 9:15am with a Liturgy at OLOL Church. We will then return to school for a presentation of photos of the children and their grandparents. After this, Grandparents and special people will be invited to the classrooms for some exciting activities. The morning will finish with a cup of tea in the School Hall. We hope many Grandparents and special people are able to join us. If you have any photos of your child and their Grandparent/s please email them to Miss Ross at eross@olprahraneast.catholic.edu.au before Tuesday 23rd July to be featured on the slideshow.
It would be super if we could have as many Dads as possible attend.
CEMSIS School Improvement Surveys
September 2 - September 20 2019
Throughout each year, we pause to listen to our students, families and staff to gauge how our learning community is travelling. This feedback is invaluable to our progress as effective school communities and is backed by evidence-based research and best practices.
One of the more important formal ways we engage and gather data is through CEMSIS, the Catholic Education Melbourne School Improvement Surveys.
CEMSIS is a set of surveys that have been built specifically for Catholic Schools in Melbourne by Learning Services teams at Catholic Education Melbourne in partnership with researchers at Learning First and in wide consultation with Principals in our schools.
In 2019, students, families and staff are invited to participate in CEMSIS using our brand new, secure and purpose-built online platform. The online platform is where our school leaders will access the summary reports that visualise the results of the student, family and staff surveys.
The CEMSIS survey platform is operated by an independent supplier, ORIMA Research Pty Ltd. The platform meets with the very high security and privacy standards for handling student and school data. Participating schools are in the process of updating their privacy policy to ensure school communities are fully informed and protected.
Students at our school will be provided with supervised sessions where teachers are on hand to help and answer any questions. Families and staff can complete the survey anytime over the three-week window via an emailed link and password. Feedback from last year’s pilot trials indicate many surveys were done across a range of mobile devices and different web browsers. We will be providing more information about CEMSIS throughout next Term via the newsletters.
Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – CEMSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.
All participation is invited, welcomed and 100% voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to feed the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Please notify the school if your child does not wish to participate. If you would like more information, please contact the school.
Matinee performance: Friday 13th September at 11.30am.
Evening performance: Friday 13th September at 7.00pm

Also, please ensure that all items of uniform are clearly marked with your child’s name.
