Dear Parents,
Thank you for your support of our Centennial celebrations on Sunday. The staff was exceptional in making the school 'celebration ready' and you as parents were exceptional in providing all the food and the joie de vivre.
Fr Hayes gave a beautiful sermon which we will publish in the next newsletter about the history of the school. We were also honoured to have Sr Helen Carboon from the Presentation Sisters attend. The Presentation Sisters started many of the Catholic schools in our area and we remain grateful for their work and sacrifice. She has since written me a lovely card congratulating the community on a wonderful celebration. "The strong community spirit that is part of OLOL was very evident today with the friendship, warmth, and welcome that was extended to me and all who attended".
The start of school is always hectic but as our Feast Day falls on the 11th of February we're always doubly hectic at OLOL. Now our leaders have been elected, Meet and Greet has taken place, Kaboom tabloid sports have been and gone, Swim Squad is finished and our Centenary has been celebrated its time for the next lot of Term One adventures!
We have our big Family Picnic tomorrow night, Ash Wednesday and Project Compassion next week, the Swimming Carnival on 21st, Photo day on Monday, Taco Tursday, NAPLAN, St Patricks Day Mass for school leaders, Easter Egg raffle, Passion Play, and the term ends on Holy Thursday at 1.00pm! Phew!
Regards
Francine
OLOL Welcome Picnic - TOMORROW
Don't forget our Welcome Picnic is on tomorrow afternoon!!
This event was a massive success last year - because you came!!!
It's going to be a warm one so a cold bevy on a hot summer's night with your kids all playing together should be a lot of fun.
Where: Lumley Park Playground, Jessamine Ave, Prahran
When: Friday 17th February from 5:30pm
What: Pack a picnic, a beverage of choice, and a blanket and join us for catch-ups with old friends or make some new ones.
What else to bring: Grandparents, aunties or uncles
Word of warning: parking around Lumley Park is difficult, can we suggest dropping off picnic supplies and family and then going to find a park on High Street, William Street, or other surrounding streets.
We look forward to seeing everybody there!
The school opens at 8.30 am. Please do not drop your children off before then.
At the moment we have a parent-run-before-school minding system. I have written about this in every newsletter for the last few months. Essentially you join the group, mind the students several times a term and then you/ your children get to use the minding system.
Apparently, there have been students being dropped off and they are not part of the minding system. This is just not fair on the parents giving up their time to have the opportunity to have their children minded. IF you need before school care please join the group, otherwise please do not drop your child at school until after 8.30am.
A priority for the school this year is to really grow the students' love of reading. We have lots of programs and initiatives planned at the school level to promote this agenda. Our theme is 'WILD ABOUT READING'. You will see some beautiful displays that Anne has made around the school reinforcing this message. We had to get the Centenery out of the way before we really went big on this but now its on!!!
One of the first activities is a whole school reading of 'Dragons Love Tacos'. This will be followed by TACO TURSDAY - 30th March (Week 10). By way of explanation, we can't have Taco Tuesday because Tuesdays are specialist days. So the next best fit by way of alliteration is Thursday but in honour of how many Celts are in our context at the moment and to be more alliterative we're calling it Taco Tursday!
We are also including in this letter details for our local libraries. As part of our excursion program, we will all be going on visits this year to various libraries but we are suggesting that you take your kids to your closest library and discover the great things the modern-day library offers. If you sign up for their newsletters etc you'll also be aware of the great programs they run during holidays.

Congratulations to all our school leaders for 2023!
We thank Mr Podbury for the preparation of the school leadership elections. The Leadership program is one that we take very seriously at OLOL. The 2022 school leaders left some big shoes to fill but, we are very confident the 2023 school leaders will do an amazing job in their leadership roles this year.

Ash Wednesday Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church
Wednesday 22nd February at 9:30am
On Wednesday 22nd February students from Year 2 - 6 will be celebrating Ash Wednesday Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church - all are welcome.
Students will receive a Project Compassion box on Wednesday to take home. Project Compassion is an extraordinary demonstration of faith, empathy and generosity. We ask that during Lent you donate to this significant charity, returning the boxes in Term 2, Week 1. Your donation, no matter how small, will enable Caritas Australia to work alongside vulnerable communities in Australia and overseas to address the challenges of poverty today, and to drive lasting change for a better tomorrow.
Open Days and Prep Enrolments for 2024
Below are the dates of our Open Days for this year. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters we are very strategic with our marketing approach. However the best possible marketing strategy is happy OLOL parents telling people about our marvellous school. Please keep getting the word out there.
Application for School Exemption for Work in the Entertainment Industry - Forms
I am aware that these 'Application for School Exemption for Work in the Entertainment Industry' are a requirement for parents involved in managing an attendance exemption for students employed or seeking employment during school hours in the entertainment industry. If there is to be a prolonged absence in order for your child to be involved in employment in the entertainment industry - we will need to complete all these forms, etc together - however, at OLOL the majority of these permissions are for a single day.
In order for things to run effectively and for you to have these returned to you in a timely manner I have initiated a new process. The two forms that require my imprimatur are available from the office. I have filled in the areas that need to be filled but you will need to date them. Therefore going forward, unless in the case of a prolonged absence, there is no need to send me all the forms etc just pick up the completed forms from the office and inform the school when your child will be absent. Thank you
Camps Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) 2023
The Victorian Government are continuing the Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) initiative to ensure all Victorian students can take part in school trips and sporting activities. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) will run over four years and provide payments for eligible students to attend camps, sports and excursions. Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. $125 per year will be paid for eligible primary school students, with $225 per year paid for eligible secondary school students. Payments will go directly to the school and be tied to the student.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card (CRN) or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child/children.
Please see below a copy of the application form for your convenience. You can also visit the website www.education.vic.gov.au/csef for more information. You should lodge a CSEF application form at the school as soon as possible to be eligible for the payment in March 2023.
The children will be catching a bus to and from the event. The bus will be leaving at 9am so please have your child at school by 8:45 am.
The bus will arrive back at school at 3pm.
The children must wear sports uniform on the day.
In a bag please make sure that your chiild has the following- towel, underpants, water bottle, hat, snack and lunch.
Fantastic news! We now have at least 2 reps for each class, so our numbers are complete. Thank you all so much once again for volunteering for this important role. Keeping families connected to the school is crucial as we continue to rebuild our social networks after covid, so I'm very grateful for the role you've volunteered to play.

What sometimes occurs is children happily completing the day at school and then going home and telling parents about something that happened that day (or in some cases many days or weeks after the incident). Parents are then ringing after school or emailing insisting on speaking with teachers about an incident that they have no idea about. The teacher is then unable to investigate what actually happened. By the next day or in fact, sometime later, it is difficult and often impossible to try and gather facts, witnesses and work out any kind of sequence of events.
At school teachers are focussing on the message - TELL US WHEN IT HAPPENS!
We take our child safety measures very seriously and have more than the legal requirement of staff on duty at all times. Your child is never far away from a staff member.
We would like for you as parents to reinforce this message by talking to your child about this and when they tell you about an incident could your first response please be "Did you tell an adult at school about this?"
Early Pick-ups Around Lunchtime
We understand that this is not always possible, but we are asking that if you are picking your child up early from school for an appointment or early departure that you avoid doing this during break times.
Recess 11.00 am - 11.30 am and Lunch 1.30 pm - 2.30pm.
It is very difficult to locate a child on the playground (many times they are across at the park) during these times.
Thank you for your understanding.
