Dear Parents,
A few days ago, I (Callan) was the principal. It was a fun day and it was the day I wrote this. When this comes out (10 of November) it was only 5 days until my birthday. So, some of the things I did was:
- write this newsletter
- extend lunch by 30 mins
- ordered hot chips for prep and one's lunch
- ordered pizza for year 3 and 4 lunch
- let the teachers wear denim and MADE Mrs Walsh wear denim
- everyone had free zooperdupers (icy poles)
- took phone calls from other principals and answered their questions
- answered a call from a lady called Mary who wanted to enrol her child and much more.
I hope your lovely kids come home with excellent stories and hope they had a fun day. Oh, I forgot to mention my sister Alba was the deputy principal she said she was having a great day.
We had an excellent, super day and I want to thank Mum and Dad for buying us the chance to be Principal and Deputy for the day.

Classes and Structure for 2023
We have just finished allocating students to their 2023 classrooms and teachers.
Where a child is in a class that is split between 2 or 3 teachers we take great pains and many hours to make sure that the students are allocated to environments that are conducive to both their well-being and their learning. We take many things into account including:
- The children all choose five friends that they would like to be with and we make sure they have at least one and sometimes two 'chosen friends'
- We look at the teachers they have had previously, and although we like to change teachers so the students get to experience multiple teaching styles and relationships, it is sometimes in the child's interests that the child retain the same teacher.
- We endeavour to ensure our classrooms are as balanced as we can in the following areas:
- gender
- academic needs
- social and emotional needs
- year levels.
As you can appreciate, this is no small task but the proof of our deliberations is shown in the successful learning program we are running at OLOL.
So to 2023, the following structures and teachers will be in place at OLOL:
Prep/Year 1
Eimear Ross
Tanya Murphy
Niamh Power
Year 2
Irene Archer
Year 3/4
Tom Venier
Louise Morgan
Year 5/6
Daniel Podbury
Literacy and Maths support Miss Bernie
Later in the year, students will meet their new teachers and classmates.
There are several staff changes for 2023 and we will be saying our goodbyes more extensively later in the year, but for now :
Miss March goes on maternity leave.
Mr Costa is returning to SA from whence he came.
Miss Jackson has a new position in Hawthorn.
Madam Estelle will also be leaving OLOL at the end of the year.
We have new staff joining us and will introduce them properly later in the year. These include Niamh Power; Louise Morgan; Vanessa Ratnayake and Gaya Nair.
We're looking forward to an exciting 2023 embracing the changes.
Physical Classroom Allocations 2023
Next year because of the way the numbers fall in the school we will have a bit of classroom movement. Please find below an outline of these exciting moves:
- The library will take up residence in Room 6 (Currently the Mr. Podbury and Year Twos' room)
- Year 5/6 will come down from the eyrie and take up residency in what is currently the Library (and 3/4 Venier's room)
- Year 2 will go to Room 4 which is currently 3/4 Archer's room
- Years 3 and 4 will go upstairs and share the adjoining space up there
- Prep/Year 1 will remain in the three rooms they currently occupy
As you can imagine these moves will take quite a bit of effort to accomplish with only three classrooms remaining in situ. We really need some strong parental help to make this happen. Please read Mr Macs appeal below and sign up to help on the morning of ...
Calling All Parents - Classroom Moving Day
In 2023 there will be quite a lot of movement of classrooms.
We really need a lot of help to move essentially tables and chairs from one room to another. I hesitate to write that we really need some dads to help with this but what we do need is strong fit 'people' to give us a hand to move stuff.
On Wednesday 14th of December, we will require some help from any parents who are free to lend us a hand. We hope this will only take us a couple of hours to complete and will begin at 9.00am.
If you are available to lend us a hand please fill out the form below and Adrian McAlister will be in touch.
THANK YOU
Prep to 5 Christmas Excursion!
As a celebration for the end of the school year, students in Prep to Year 5 will be enjoying a cinema excursion. We will all be going to see the film 'The Nutcracker and The Magic Flute'. The excursion will take place on Thursday 8th December (the same day as the Year 6 Fun Day Out.)
Students, staff and parent helpers will leave OLOL at 11:00am and travel by train from Toorak Train Station to South Yarra Train Station. We will then walk from South Yarra Train Station to Como Cinema (located on the corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street).
Students will eat their lunch before the movie begins at 12:30pm. (Please note the movie is rated a PG.)
Following the movie we will head back to school via train.
A very special thanks goes to Lisa Collinson for her help in organising this excursion for OLOL.
Please complete the permission form before Friday 25th November.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Sunday 27th November is the First Sunday of Advent - it is also our Welcome Mass for next year's Prep Families. Although this year’s Foundation and Year 1 families are hosting the Mass and Morning Tea which follows, it would be a great thing if the whole school was present in order for all these new families and students to feel that they are truly becoming part of a very special community. Please remember that all of our school leaders should absolutely be present at this Mass.
Christmas Carols - Thursday 15th December
On Thursday 15th December there will be a whole school celebration incorporating Christmas Carols, Year 6 Graduation Ceremony and End of Year Disco. The evening will begin in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 6:00pm. The Carols and Graduation Ceremony will be followed by the Disco at the school. All students will be part of this event so please save the date.
Each class has been assigned a special role in the Christmas Carol Service, please do not feel you have to go out and buy costumes, a homemade costume looks just as good!
Costume details for each class are as follows:
Matific and Mangahigh Subscriptions for 2023
Due to a decline in the use of Matific and Mangahigh, we will not be renewing our subscription to these online maths resources. Instead, we will be putting this money into classroom-based resources.
Parents can continue the subscription at their own cost. Mangahigh is $99 per year and Matific is $69.99. These prices are approximate and subject to change upon enquiry.
