Last night our saintly Year Two's made their Sacrament of Reconciliation. I have written my thoughts on this special sacrament in the section below. These thoughts are addressed at an adult level for you, as parents, for your own reflection. Thank you to Mr. Podbury and Miss. Archer for preparing the students and thank you parents for attending last night.
So we are drawing closer and closer to our big event on Saturday. A huge thank you to Jordarna and her team for the work that has gone into this event. As you know all money raised goes directly to our building project. There are some absolutely beautiful prizes and we are very grateful to the generosity of the families of the school for donating so liberally. If you are yet to buy a ticket please see the link below to purchase. Tickets will also be available at the door.
We are getting very excited about our senior production of Pirates of Penzance. The school was full of Police, Maidens, and Pirates the other day counting down the last weeks of rehearsal. Please buy a ticket (link here or use the QR Code below) and bring your children to this event to support the artistic endeavours of our Senior School. OLOL students and toddlers get in FREE!
Please note we are making a special effort to ensure our calendar is up to date and full of details. So when you are unsure of something click onto Zsapp - School Calendar tile and then if you tap the actual event more information pops up!
Finally, we have our first whole school Mass in almost three years on Sunday 28th August. You should have all received a special invitation to this Mass from your children this week. As well as the Mass we always hold a morning tea after the Mass and generally a class or level is responsible for organising this. As we are expecting most of the school to be at this very special 'first time in three years Mass' we have asked everyone to contribute by bringing a plate of food to the morning tea. However, we will be asking the parents of students in Yyears 2, 3, and 4 to host this morning tea. (I have attached a PDF of Morning Tea Instructions to this Newsletter but Class Reps will also receive instructions regarding what this involves shortly. As you can see from the PDF it's basically making tea and coffee and a bit of a clean-up afterwards). Prep and Year One your hosting duties will be at our next Mass which is the Welcome Mass for next year's Preps on Sunday 27th November. We do share the love!
Looking Forward to seeing you all on Saturday Night!!!

The Sacrament of Reconciliation
This is an ancient Sacrament with a very modern purpose. We strive at OLOL to help parents create good citizens. Part of being a fully rounded person (of any denomination) is to be able to identify when we have done the wrong thing or made a poor choice. Then to be able to take responsibility for it, ask for and receive forgiveness and make reparation for the poor choice or wrong action. This idea is essentially what drives our discipline policy at OLOL too. In policy we call it ‘Restorative Practices’ where we give the children the opportunity to repair the damage that their action has caused to a relationship. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is restorative too - because when we ‘sin’ or make poor choices in life we damage our relationship with God and the Sacrament enables us to repair the damage, and restore the relationship.
The ability to identify behaviours and understand their impact is an important part of moving through the psychological phases of childhood development. Being able to forgive and ask for forgiveness is an important part of a child’s spiritual development too.
We all understand the awful feeling when we have made a poor choice, feeling dreadful about what we have done or said and wishing to goodness we could undo what we’d done and experience the peace of what had come before. In our times of heightened child anxiety, it is psychologically very healthy to be able to articulate where we have gone wrong and receive forgiveness. To know and understand that we are loved unconditionally, and that nothing is so bad that it can't be forgiven is a powerful and uplifting concept.
On this idea, I'm quoting not Jesus (who has a lot to say on the theme of forgiveness) or Saint Augustine who also wrote entire tomes on the subject but Paul Kelly who wrote a most heartfelt song - some of the lyrics here…
All the kings and queens in the Bible, they could not turn back time
So what chance have I, of a miracle, In this life of mine?
I only want one day to unsay the things I said undo the thing I did
24 little hours Oh God, please wipe them all away
And I promise I will change - If I could start today again
Please give me back today, and I won't say the things I said or do that thing I did
Every minute, every hour the replay's just the same and I can't stand the shame
Oh, let me start today again
I know my prayer's in vain, but for a second, I'll pretend, that I can start today again.
As Catholics we do have access to this ‘miracle’ - not to turn back time but to start again. Every time we do the wrong thing or sin, we hurt ourselves, other people, and God. In Reconciliation, we acknowledge our wrongdoing before God and the Church. We express our sorrow in a meaningful way, receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church, make reparation for what we have done, and resolve to do better in the future.
Congratulations to the Year 2 students who celebrated their First Reconciliation yesterday evening. We hope it will be one of many opportunities you have to reconcile with God.

Book Week 2022 - Dreaming with Eyes Open...
In Year 6 we have a really exciting piece that we are doing for the Art Show but there is one problem… the materials we need are really expensive! We need to raise money to help pay for the materials and our solution to this dilemma is that on Thursday the 25th of August (on the Book Week Dress-up day) our class will be having a Sausage Sizzle along with a Bake Sale! It will be held at lunch time (1:30pm) on the basketball court. Everything at the bake sale and sausage sizzle will be $3 each but if you would like 1 sausage and 1 baked good there will be a Special Combo for only $5! So make sure to bring some money so you can have some yummy sausages and yummy snacks.

The Year 2 Class presented their assembly on their amazing efforts during Running Club in Semester 1. As a class, they calculated their total laps and measured different areas around the school, to compare the distance they ran and how many laps it would be of the chosen area. They used their bodies to run an amazing amount of laps and their minds to do their calculations.
