Welcome officially to term three. A cold but busy term!
As you can see one week in and we've already held lots of fun. Activities including a family play day 'Sunday Afternoon in the Park' and a spectacular first-ever French Day.
This term we have (as well as all our teaching and learning goals to achieve), Book Week, MACSISS Survey, Holt Athletics Carnival, Fathers Day Liturgy, Pirates of Penzance Senior Production, a School Closure Day, a Big Inquiry Expo, 100 Days of Prep, Open Day, First Reconciliation, a Book Fair, and our Major P&F Winter Fundraiser.
Details of all these events are in your school calendar.
I urge you on behalf of the whole school community to get behind our major fundraiser by both donating prizes to the auction and very importantly by attending. All the money raised will go toward our planned building projects.
Before I sign off on what will surely go down in history as one of the shorter introductions to the newsletter, I wish to thank you for your efforts in dressing up the students for Bastille Day last week. Considering we were only four days into the term it was an impressive effort.
Stay warm and healthy!

Grandparents' and other Special People Day
On Thursday 28th July we will be celebrating and giving thanks for our Grandparents' just two days after the Feast of St Anne and Joachim. St Anne and St Joachim are the parents of Mary and therefore Jesus' Nanna and Poppa.
Saints, Joachim, and Anne had been married for twenty years but had no children. St Joachim pleaded with God to send them a child. After a period of fasting and prayer, an angel appeared to St Joachim and told him that his wife would give birth to a child whom they should call Mary and dedicate to God.
St. Joachim is the Patron Saint of fathers, grandfathers, grandparents, married couples, cabinet makers and linen traders. St. Anne is the patron saint of Christian mothers and of women in labour.
To celebrate this special day we are inviting any Grandparents or special people in your child's life to attend this special morning. The morning will begin at 9:00am at the school where the grandparents and special people can join the children for roll call in the classrooms. They will then walk with the classes over to Mass at OLOL Church. Children can sit with their grandparents or special people during Mass (so long as they are reverent, respectful, and well-behaved - the grandparents that is). After Mass at the church, we will return to school for a presentation of photos of the children and their grandparents. After this, Grandparents and special people will be invited to the classrooms for some exciting activities. The morning will finish with a cup of tea in the School Hall. We hope many Grandparents and special people are able to join us.
If you have any photos of your child and their Grandparent/s please email them to Irene Archer at irene.archer@olprahraneast.catholic.edu.au before Monday 25th July to be featured on the slideshow!!!!

Our first French Day celebrations at OLOL last Thursday were a huge success. What enthusiasm! What joy! Everyone got into the spirit of the day. The school was transformed into a sea of bleu, blanc and rouge. The day started with a special assembly with our faith leaders giving the school prayer in French followed by French awards and best costume awards for teachers and students. We had Tour de France cyclists, King Louis, Coco Chanel, multiple mimes, and even le Marquis de Lafayette!
During our French day assembly, we also gave out the inaugural Bastille Day Learning awards. The recipients of these award were: Fleur Premsara (P/1J); Brooklyn Underwood (3/4A); George Hely (P/1M).
As the French program, we are undertaking is officially called 'Teachers As Co-learners', we also gave out Teachers Awards. So we also need to congratulate:
Mr Costa (Red Hot Go) and The P/1 Team (Enthusiasm).
After recess and croissants, our younger students (Y P-2) watched Les Aristochats in French with English subtitles while our older students (Y 3-6) watched Le Petit Nicolas. Thanks to everyone for a fantastic inaugural French day.
We need to recognise the contribution of our Madam Estelle who is working wonders with our new French program, please speak with your children about their French - you may just be supris!
Merci!!
Get the babysitter ready; the OLOL Winter Fundraiser takes place at the Prahran Hotel, Saturday 20th August at 7pm.
This isn’t just an opportunity to let your hair down and shake off the winter frost with the best parents in town – it’s also our school’s major fundraiser for the year, with all money raised going towards our building fund (think new classrooms, indoor and outdoor learning areas, and refurbishments that our kids and staff need and would love!).
As with any fundraising endeavour, we rely on the generosity of our school community, via donations. Donated prizes will be raffled before and on the night; more details will be announced in the coming weeks.
If you’re in a position to donate a big-ticket item that could be auctioned on the night, we want to hear from you! Please contact the school or P&F.
We look forward to celebrating and supporting our wonderful school!
Sacrament of Reconciliation - Year 2
First Reconciliation will be celebrated in Term 3 however, in order for us to organise the program and the events please can you inform us with whether or not your child will be making their First Reconciliation by completing this form as soon as possible, or before Friday 22nd July.
Both sessions were well attended despite the freezing evenings and the anecdotal feedback was very positive. Please remember to use the resources Alison handed out during the evenings to continue these conversations in your homes. We also thank Miss Archer for ensuring these sessions took place.
At OLOL we are trying to give the students every opportunity to make up for some of the things that were compromised in the last two years. Mrs. McGurk tried valiantly to push through with our production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicoloured Dream coat, last year but it was compromised. So we have decided that our fabulous senior school students (in particular the year sixes) need a final opportunity for a proper experience of a primary school musical production. To this end with the fabulous Miss Bernie our year five and sixes are going to - for the first time ever at OLOL- perform a senior school production.
The production will be the rollickingly good fun "PIRATES OF PENZANCE". It will be performed by Years Five and Six for the whole school community.
Performances will take place at De La Salle's Performing Arts Centre
Performances will be: September 8th - 11am (Matinee) and 7pm
Next year as per our bi-annual pattern of full school musical production - the entire school will be involved in the production. 'Pirates' is just a very special exception for a very special group of students.
To purchase tickets please use the QR code. OLOL students come free!
A big thank you to all the brave families who came out for a winter play date last Sunday. Thank you P&F for organising it!

Last week was our first gymnastics lesson. The kids were rolling, jumping, spinning and twirling around the course.
Changes to the Child Safety Standards commenced on 1 July 2022. The eleven Standards replace Victoria’s previous seven standards and principles.
Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) has a dedicated Student Wellbeing Unit, Learning Diversity Unit and Legal and Professional Standards Unit who work closely with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA), the Department of Education and Training (DET), the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), and the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP) to manage the risk of child abuse.
There has been a review of policies and procedures that reflect the recent Victorian legislative amendments with respect to managing the risk of child abuse. The updates to these policies complement the introduction of new Victorian Child Safe Standards, which were effective for all Victorian schools from 1 July 2022.
With this in mind some of our policies and procedures have changed. Please see the school website for the most up to date information. Policies are also available in print form from the School Office.
We would like to bring two very important policies to your attention:
Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
Engaging Families in Child Safety Policy
If you require any further information or clarification on any of the Child Safety Standards please contact the Office.
Working with Children Check (WWCC) - Expired Cards
Parents and volunteers in our school require Working with Children Checks for a range of school activities that involve interacting with students such as excursions, school swimming squad and any volunteering in the classroom (reading etc.) This is consistent with Victorian Government requirements. WWCCs will not be required for any school fundraising or social activities.
For further information, please go to http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au.
We have masks available for students and are encouragng their use. Current advice from the Victorian Government on the wearing of face masks is available here: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/face-masks: It states:
Wearing a face mask can help protect you and those around you. Face masks stop droplets from spreading when you talk, cough, sneeze, and laugh, which lowers your chance of spreading or catching the virus. This information is especially important for those who are medically at risk. The advice also strongly recommends the wearing of face masks in indoor settings (noting that exceptions to the recommendation apply to teaching circumstances when clear enunciation or visibility of the mouth is essential). We have been asked to communicate this advice clearly to staff, students, and families. Household contacts attending school who are over 8 years of age are required to wear facemasks indoors unless they have a valid exception.
Everyone including students aged 8 years and above must wear a face mask when traveling on public transport, taxis, or ride-share vehicles.
Updated RATS distribution procedures
The Victorian Government has determined the rapid antigen test (RAT) distribution strategy for Terms 3 and 4.
Under the approach, schools will receive up to three deliveries of RATs each in Terms 3 and 4.
Schools will be able to provide these RATs to parents/carers, staff, or students on request, as the previous settings that required weekly or daily testing of students and staff have ceased.
Please let us know if you would like a kit sent home with your child/ren - and please continue to keep sick and symptomatic children home.
