Dear Parents and Carers,
The decision not to hold a sausage sizzle at last Saturday's election was a sad moment for our school. It is sad because it illustrates an erosion of the very thing the school has always prided itself on - its community. It was also disappointing because right when we desperately need funds to be able to afford new classrooms we missed an easy money-making opportunity. By not having a vibrant happy presence out the front of the school we also passed up the chance to promote the school to potential students and families.
I do take some degree of personal responsibility, in managing to grow the school to a position of sustainability, perhaps I have missed relaying a major aspect - that you are the community. The staff and I enable the community but parents and families are the key components. When this school operated at between 50 - 70 students they always managed to run the election BBQ.
I am aware that there were many reasons why we did not have enough people committing to the roster. I believe the Zsapp applications are not showing the red notification dot and therefore many parents missed my appeal on Tuesday. Some parents were waiting on sporting fixtures to be finalised and some intended to be there but hadn’t gotten around to putting their names on the roster. That last point of intending to fill in the form but just being a bit late with it is really the issue I am going to focus on today.
One aspect that is creating great stress on the school is the late return of forms and permission slips. This may be due to a 'COVID effect', I'm not sure, but it is impacting us enormously. I have on multiple occasions seen staff ringing lists of parents to ask them to get information or permissions back to us. The reason that I am making such a point of this is, that in these times of high staff absentee due to illness we are operating short-staffed and teachers using their time to ring around to remind parents for permission forms is not a good or valuable use of time.
As a result, I am going to make a very definite call. We will no longer be phoning parents to return forms, information, or permission slips. We will, of course, use the usual avenues of communication to let you know about the event and permissions required and we will even send out reminders but if we don't have the information/permissions required by the return dates, unfortunately, your child will have to forgo the event. This includes sporting events, excursions, PSG’s and Sacraments.
And so, we have the rest of the year to rebuild what hopefully was a slight lull in a huge wave of community engagement. There will be a P and F meeting soon to let everyone know about community opportunities for the last six months of the year. As an added bonus we have another bite at the democracy sausage at November’s State election!

The OLOL Winter Beanie Appeal has well and truly kicked off and the orders are coming in thick and fast!
The cold weather has set in and it's time to get a beanie and keep your head warm! Your OLOL beanie will not only keep your head toasty warm during the cold winter months, but you will be contributing to the lives of those less fortunate through the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.
Order forms were sent home on Monday and we encourage all families and students to get the order form back asap!
We look forward to seeing everyone wearing their OLOL beanies!

School Books and Reader AMNESTY
Before we spend hundreds of dollars on replacing reading books for the school we thought we might ask that you take a look around your homes and send in any school books. During COVID lockdowns we sent hundreds of books into your homes to support the online learning. We knew there would be a loss but it was a cost we decided we had to bare. We probably didn't think we'd lose quite as many as we actually lost ... so ... we are running an AMNESTY!
Amnesty, definition: The term 'amnesty' is derived from the Greek amnesia meaning forgetfulness or oblivion. It refers to a grant of forgiveness for a past criminal offence by a sovereign power, usually for an offence committed against the state (such as treason, sedition, or rebellion) (or not returning school books).
So if we get the books back - no questions will be asked, and forgiveness will be automatic. We will just be delighted to have to spend a little less on replacing them.
The Wonder of Living program supports parents with discussing issues around growing up, puberty and sexuality education generally. We are happy to announce that in term three we have booked two sessions with the Wonder of Living program presenters which offer a holistic sexuality education program for Year 3 – 6.
These evenings are a combination of parent/child presentation and discussion and are matched to the needs of children. Wonder of Living is a value-based, family-orientated program which supports a parent’s role as primary educator by modelling the delivery of age appropriate information. These two evenings will bring concepts to life and provide accurate, sensitive explanations to the questions every child needs to ask.
The facilitator led evenings give support to the rights and responsibilities of parents around these issues while respecting the privacy of children and young adolescents. The sessions run for around one hour.
Monday 18th July 6pm
This evening is for families with children in Years 5 and 6 only it is called “Stepping Out” and deals with the topic of puberty.
Wednesday 20th July 6pm
This evening is for families with children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and is called “A New Baby”.
We are encouraging every family with a child in year 5 and 6 to attend both evenings as they deal with very separate but equally important information.
Please diarise these dates. More details to follow.
Parent Interviews will be held on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st of June from 3:20 pm - 6 pm. Students are required to attend these meetings.
The booking link will be available to all school families on Thursday 9th June.
OLOL on the charge at Interschool Holt Cross Country!
The annual Interschool Holt District Cross Country was held at Bald Hill Park on Friday 13th May and OLOL was represented by students from years 3 to 6. Tough conditions met the students on the morning, with rain making the course even more challenging. The OLOL team bounced off the bus and nothing could dampen the energy and spirit of the students.
Students competed across four age groups, with two race distances of 2km and 3km around the rolling hills of Bald Hill Park. The students of OLOL were amazing with all of them showing the OLOL school spirit through their effort, persistence, and determination.
As they crossed the finish line, they were cheered on and greeted by the OLOL team and once the look of exhaustion passed, it was smiles all around!
Let's talk about the results...
There are two shields awarded on the day, the percentage shield and the overall shield. The percentage shield is calculated on the number of students in years 3 - 6 and the overall shield is calculated on the number of students in the whole school.
Every OLOL student played their part in lifting OLOL to FOURTH place in the percentage shield and THIRD place in the overall shield. A huge result and something that the whole school community should be very proud of! After years of finishing second last, to finish third overall is EPIC!
So how well did OLOL do you ask? To fully understand the enormity of the achievement, we need to understand where OLOL sits in the Holt District based on our numbers. OLOL sits sixth and seventh in the division for both the number of students in years 3 - 6 and the number of students overall.
To finish where we did in both shields is MIGHTY! Both are incredible results based on our numbers across years 3 - 6 and the whole school.
It is an outstanding effort and a reflection and reward for the efforts of students in their weekly Running Club sessions. Their hard work paid off and carried OLOL onto the podium!
A special mention to the following students for their efforts by finishing in the top 20 in their age groups.
9/10 Girls - Marnie Jones 1st, Stella Meldrum 3rd, Rose Delmo 6th, Allegra Sirgiovanni 11th.
9/10 Boys - Maximum Edelsten 7th, Sasha Robertson 11th.
11 Girls - Adelaide McQueen 8th, Clementine Grant 16th.
12/13 Boys - Cooper Robertson 14th, Nate Hanily 16th.
Students who finished in the top 8 in their category will progress to the next division on Tuesday 31st May. Good luck to Marnie Jones, Stella Meldrum, Rose Delmo, Maximum Edelsten and Adelaide McQueen! We will all be cheering you on from school and we know they will all do OLOL proud!
Once again a BIG congratulations to all students in years 3 - 6 for their efforts on the day. They all displayed wonderful sportsmanship both on and off the course.
Students in Year 3 and 4 have been learning all about the Sacrament of Eucharist. Thirty seven students will be celebrating their First Eucharist over two days:
Saturday 4th June at 6pm at St Peters Church, Toorak
Sunday 5th June at 11:15am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Working with Children Check (WWCC)
Parents and volunteers in our school require Working with Children Checks for a range of school activities that involve interacting with students such as excursions, school swimming squad and any volunteering in the classroom (reading etc.) This is consistent with Victorian Government requirements. WWCCs will not be required for any school fundraising or social activities.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. As you probably know, Reconciliation Week is coming up and I wanted to make sure that you knew that there will be a ‘Yarning Circle’ in Prahran Square on Saturday 28 May from 1pm -4pm.
The event is hosted by Stonnington council and led by Wurundjeri Elders Aunty Dianne Kerr and Aunty Gail Smith. The event will be opened by the Mayor at 1pm and followed by a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.
In addition, Prahran Square will feature jewellery making, dance performances and an information stand by Reconciliation Stonnington.

Finally, this is a great moment to reflect that ‘Toorak’ is from an aboriginal word meaning ‘swamp with rushes’ and ‘Prahran’ came from a word meaning ‘almost surrounded by water’ – which referred to the Yarra River.

Stonnington Library - School Holiday Program
Stonnington Library are very excited to announce that bookings for our School Holiday Program are now open. They have a whole bunch of fun sessions organised including chemistry workshops, the science of toys workshops, coding sessions, craft activities, writing workshops, animal shows, and problem solving games. The sessions are a mixture of online and in person events and are suitable for primary school aged kids.
