I am so thrilled by the 'vibe' in the school at the moment. Despite the fact that we have constant disruptions from either COVID infected or sick staff and students there is a real feeling of gratitude that we are here. This is shown in so many ways. Play-ground behaviour has returned to our pre-COVID standards, systems and procedures are being largely followed by the community, and participation in clubs and extra-curricular activities is through the roof!
As well as the great percentages that Mr. Podbury shared in the last newsletter about OLOL students participating in team sports, Lego Club, Chess Club, Net Set Go, Hip Hop, and Garden Club are all fully operational and ABC Music has had to add an extra day to the OLOL timetable to cope with demand.
We have lots of students in our school preparing for Sacraments at the moment. Our senior students are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation while our year Three and Fours are getting ready for the sacrament of Eucharist. We ask for you to keep all these children in your prayers during this important time of preparation.
On Saturday 21st may (ELECTION DAY) OLOL is being used as an AEC polling venue. As a result, the P&F is organising our Sausage Sizzle. This is actually quite a fun thing to be part of and we ask you to be generous with your time and pop yourself on the roster for a shift. It's a great way to meet people in our community that you have not met before and represents everything that our society has missed out on for two years.
There are Mothers Day drinks this evening at the Orrong. I know it's difficult to get away for many of you but I urge those of you that can to get together and establish or reestablish those very important bonds. There is nothing more joyous than just getting together to socialise and have fun. These are the very occasions that have been missed in the last two years and the more mums that can come together this evening the better. If your mum is local the offer always extends to grandmothers as well (plus it would give me someone my own age to talk to!). Please click on the RSVP link at the top of the newsletter.
We have a School Advisory Committee (formally School Board) meeting this week. The agenda is packed with discussions around financing a new and much-needed building project as well as making some decisions as to how to celebrate our Centenary. We will share our deliberations with the community as they develop.
I would like to thank all parents for their support of the school and for ensuring that our children are immersing themselves back in the childhood they deserve.
Thank you
Francine
On Saturday 21st may (ELECTION DAY) OLOL is being used as an AEC polling venue. As a result, the P&F is organising our Sausage Sizzle.
It's time to put your name on a shift and take your place in the age-old tradition of the primary school election day sausage sizzle.
This is actually quite a fun thing to be part of and we ask you to be generous with your time and pop yourself on the roster for a shift.
Apart from the fact that it is a great way to meet people in our community that you have not met before it is a terrific opportunity to welcome people to our school which in turn could lead to enrolments. I have made a marketing board in the foyer and will leave materials out for the wider community to both take and hopefully hand on.
So as you can see this Sausage Sizzle offers more than the chance to hoe into a Democracy Sausage, it:
- Gives you an opportunity to work with and meet OLOL parents
- Raises money for the school
- Is a chance to engage local people in the benefits of our lovely school and therefore grow enrolments
- Is actually quite a fun way to spend a couple of hours
PLEASE SUPPORT THE SCHOOL, YOUR KIDS, THE P&F AND SIGN UP FOR A SHIFT!
Thank you
The Sacramental Programs for Confirmation and Eucharist are well underway. Please keep the students in Years 3-6 in your prayers over the coming weeks.
We look forward to seeing the Year 3 and 4 students and their parents tonight at the Information Evening, 6pm in the School Hall.
Sacrament of Confirmation - Friday 27th May at 6:00pm
Sacrament of Eucharist - Saturday 4th June at 6:00pm and Sunday 5th June 11:15am
All are welcome!
As the weather gets less and less glorious. I am asking parents to stay with our now established pattern of parking and walking to pick students up from the school. I know it's miserable to have to hop out of warm dry cars on a wet afternoon - but we ask that you do. We have been doing so well with our system of leaving speedy pick up to parents with a baby or child in the car.
Katie Allen was up here last week doing whatever it is that politicians do outside of schools around election times (I think the term is meeting the constituants) - and she asked me to commend both the staff and parents on the most orderly system she has seen anywhere and she assures me that she has been everywhere! In all honesty, she was SOOOO impressed by the speed and safety of our end-of-day processes.
So just a little reminder to please continue to park and pick up your children regardless of the weather. THANK YOU!
At OLOL we are trying to give the students every opportunity to make up for some of the things that were compromised in the last two years. Mrs. McGurk tried valiantly to push through with our production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicoloured Dream coat, last year but it was compromised. So we have decided that our fabulous senior school students (in particular the year sixes) need a final opportunity for a proper experience of a primary school musical production. To this end with the fabulous Miss Bernie our year five and sixes are going to - for the first time ever at OLOL- perform a senior school production.
The production will be the rollickingly good fun "PIRATES OF PENZANCE". It will be performed by Years Five and Six for the whole school community.
Performances will take place at De La Salle's Performing Arts Centre
Performance Date will be: September 8th with more details to follow.
Next year as per our bi-annual pattern of full school musical production - the entire school will be involved in the production. 'Pirates' is just a very special exception for a very special group of students.
SRC are Running an OLOL Winter Beanie Appeal
The OLOL Winter Beanie Appeal is upon us and not a moment too late with the colder months just around the corner! The aim of the appeal is to not only keep your head warm, but it is also to contribute to the St Vincent's Winter Appeal and help those less fortunate.
For every beanie sold, the school will donate $2 to St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal and you too can make an extra donation. There will be two options when buying a beanie;
- Option One - Beanie only - $15
- Option Two - Beanie and $5 donation - $20 (plus the school's $2 donation)
Order forms will be sent home on Monday 23rd May and class SRC members will be responsible for coordinating all orders.
To keep your head warm and to make a difference to the lives of people who need our support, buy a beanie!
We look forward to seeing everyone wearing their OLOL beanies!
Daniel and the SRC Team
OLOL SCHOOL UNIFORM SHOP IS CLOSED - NO MORE ORDERS
Thank you for getting organised in order to withstand our five-week black-out of uniforms.
PSW provision of uniforms will commence from June 14 2022 which is later this term.
I'd like to add a special note of thanks to Tones (ably abetted by Tracey and the ESO team) for managing this complex handover - THANK YOU!
In our last newsletter, we made comment that Autumn is notoriously bad for head lice. But we now have a reported case in the school. Please examine your child’s hair for signs of lice infestation. These usually first appear as eggs or nits, tiny silvery white specks attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.
If you find eggs in your child’s hair please treat immediately and do not send your child back to school until the eggs have been removed as well as treated.
Please note that you do need to check the hair for any eggs and remove them either by using the supplied comb or by pulling the egg off the hair strand with your finger nails.
Please make sure that you do regular checks on your child’s hair. If eggs are left, the lice will reinfest. It is also advisable to retreat the hair 7 days after the first treatment. It is also very important for all girls with long hair to wear it tied back.
One wonderful and considerate mother sent us the following link for a product . “I just wanted to share with you the details of the product I had talked about, as I find it very clever for our children’s heads”
http://www.danielgalvinjunior.com/product/dubble-trubble-detangling-lice-repel-spray/
Gelling children's hair before tying it in a bun or ponytail (like ballet kids do) is also a very proactive way of preventing infestation.
We have a most marvelous system for the return of lost property. It goes like this:
Step 1. Find abandoned item
Step 2. Find name on said item
Step 3. Return lost item to rightful owner
This marvelous system breaks down a bit when the item does not have a name on it.
I also think that by the second term some names have rubbed off items especially drink bottles. So please check your child's items and ensure names are on them so that our returning of lost items system works.
The other glitch in this system is where one family gives items of clothing to another family but the new family does not update the name on the item. The other day I picked up a jumper and the name on the jumper was a child who finished at OLOL five years ago! So please if everyone has a concerted effort at updating and re-naming items then our school will function even better! Thank you.
The School Advisory Committee met on Tuesday evening and one of the agenda items was Celebrating our Centenary. The outcome of that meeting was that:
We will be forming a committee to head the logistical aspects of the Centenary celebrations. At this point, we are inviting anyone from our present community that might be happy to help organise an appropriately fabulous event to please let Francine know. At the moment what we do know is:
The centenary will be celebrated with a big adults-only party in 1920's style on:
EVENING SATURDAY 11TH FEBRUARY 2023
(This is also Our Lady of Lourdes Feast day)
OLOL SCHOOL

The Child Safe Standards commenced in Victoria in January 2016. Changes are being made to make our Standards even stronger.
These changes will commence on 1 July 2022. The eleven new Standards will replace Victoria’s current seven standards and principles.
With this in mind some of our policies and procedures will be changing over the coming weeks. Please see the school website for the most up to date information. Policies are also available in print form from the School Office.
