Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2!
I hope you and your families enjoyed a wonderful break over the Easter holidays.
There are some important changes to the COVID Safe measures for schools that apply from now! They are set out below.
One of the best things about the relaxing of the safety measures is that parents are now welcome back into the school. This means you are welcome to join us for assembly. Assembly is held every Thursday at 2.55pm in the school. It has been two years since we have had a whole school assembly inside with parents able to join us.
We do try to limit parents in the school before school as the students and teachers need a calm preparation time to get ready for the day ahead. Before school is not the time to try and chat with teachers however you are ALWAYS welcome to make a time for chats. Now that we are in term two we are also trying to build independence in all students. This includes them carrying their own bag into school, unpacking it, and getting ready for the learning and fun ahead.
There is a lot in this newsletter but that excites me because this time last year we were all locked up not knowing what was ahead of us.
Thank you all for your constant support,
Francine
New COVID Safe Measures for Schools
Face masks
Face masks, while recommended, are not required in any school setting. This means students in grades 3 to 6, staff and visitors in primary schools are no longer required to wear face masks. Any student or staff member who wishes to wear a mask may do so, including those who are medically at-risk.
Rapid antigen test screening requirements
Students aged 8 years and above who are household contacts are required to wear face masks when indoors at school unless they have a valid exemption.
If a student household contact returns a positive RAT result, they must isolate for 7 days.
Vaccination requirements for visitors to schools
Parents, carers and other adult visitors (not performing work) are no longer required to show evidence of two doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
RAT screening program reminder
WE WILL NO LONGER BE ISSUING RATS BY PICK-UP. WE WILL INSTEAD BE SENDING EACH CHILD HOME WITH THEIR ALLOCATED KIT IN THEIR BAGS -
WE WILL SZAPP OUT WHEN WE ARE DOING THIS SO THAT YOU KNOW TO CHECK BAGS FOR KITS.
The testing recommendations will remain the same this Term for students and staff with:
- mainstream schools – recommended to test at home twice a week
As we approach winter and flu season, the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 and booster shots for students 16+ remains the best way to ensure protection for students and staff.
If you have any concerns about getting your child vaccinated, please get in contact with your GP or another health professional who can answer your questions.
Thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our school safe.
Students in Year 3 and 4 had an Un-Bee-Lievably great day today with Holly from Holly's Backyard Bees!
We learnt all about the different types of bees and the special equipment needed for beekeeping. We got to taste some rather yummy honey and then made some very sustainable beeswax food wrap.
Check out our social media to see some more photos and videos, including some Auslan!

As part of the Wellbeing program for 2022, we have a focus on increasing student participation in team sports across the school. To better understand what team sports students are currently participating in, students from Prep to Year 6 completed the ‘OLOL Sports Survey’.
The survey outcomes were;
Foundation and Year One;
- To gather data about the participation of students in team and individual sports
- To understand the needs of students and support them through the ‘Skills Squad’ program
- To support students by providing them with opportunities to learn and practice sport-specific skills.
Year 2 - Year 6
- To gather data about the participation of students in team and individual sports
- To support student participation in team sports by providing them with opportunities to learn and practice sport-specific skills
- To increase the overall participation of OLOL students in team sports.
The results were very positive with 80% of students from Year 1 - 6 participating in Team Sports.
We are very grateful to all those families that jumped on board this important focus, 80% involvement is a pretty good result. We hope that the strategies that OLOL have put in place to encourage participation in team sports have helped families. With this in mind remember we are always happy to put ads for local teams in our newsletter free of charge. We encourage you to contact Mr Podbury if your family requires more information about local teams and support in getting your child or children involved.
A big thank you and well done to the SRC members who sold ANZAC day badges during the last week of Term One. Each day they arrived promptly and did a wonderful job interacting with the students and parents who came to buy badges. They were welcoming, polite and greeted everyone with big smiles. A wonderful start to the year for the SRC!
2022 represents 100 years of the OLOL Parish School. We are hoping, with your help, to create a digital archive of all things historically connected to our beautiful school.
Please feel free to upload your photos, film clips, stories and memories to our Facebook group which can be accessed below.
We can’t wait for you to share these with us!
Lunchtime Chess Classes will recommence next week on Monday 2nd May. ‘Chess Ideas’ will run the sessions. These classes will cost $16.00 per lesson. All students from Prep - Year 6 are eligible to enrol, but they must commit to a full term’s program (this term it is 7 sessions). During the sessions there is a formal teaching component and then an experience/play component. The formal component is fully interactive, with children being required to analyse situations and decide on a series of outcomes together before breaking off to play one on one.
It is important to remember that in the game of chess, a child mentally analyses a situation and then makes a move. All of this is done without the aid of reading or writing. So Chess is a valuable game to learn to play even before a child has acquired the skills of reading and writing. It supports all students in reasoning, logical deduction, process, strategy and analysis. It is easy to see why there is research around how playing chess supports students learning in other areas.
Please see below, chess registration form. They will also be available from the office upon request.
As usual, OLOL will be running Chess and Lego Clubs again in Terms Two and Three of this year. We like to offer students the chance to learn to play Chess and Lego when the weather is less inviting than in terms one and four.
I thought this might be a good time to outline all the clubs that OLOL runs, on what days/times they are held, and how you can make contact with the organisers of the different activities if you are interested in being involved. All Providers run independently of the school but as they are using our school come under our strict Child Safety Standards.

Autumn is notoriously bad for head lice so we're just trying to get a jump on it - pardon the pun!
With that in mind, I would ask that all parents examine their child’s hair for signs of lice infestation. These usually first appear as eggs or nits, tiny silvery white specks attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.
If you find eggs in your child’s hair please treat immediately and do not send your child back to school until the eggs have been removed as well as treated.
Please note that you do need to check the hair for any eggs and remove them either by using the supplied comb or by pulling the egg off the hair strand with your finger nails.
Please make sure that you do regular checks on your child’s hair. If eggs are left, the lice will reinfest. It is also advisable to retreat the hair 7 days after the first treatment. It is also very important for all girls with long hair to wear it tied back.
One wonderful and considerate mother has sent me this product for your information. “I just wanted to share with you the details of the product I had talked about, as I find it very clever for our children’s heads”
