Dear Parents and Carers,
What a resounding success our Feast Day school picnic last Friday evening was. So many happy faces and such a beautiful antidote to two years of largely abandoned school community events!
It was such a success I hazard a guess that it might need repeating. In the meantime, our wonderful P&F has organised a parent-only 'Welcome Drinks' event on Friday fortnight and I dearly hope that the turn up will be as comprehensive and the happiness as palpable.
Thank you so much for being there - it was a wonderful evening and the kids - LOVED it!!
Speaking of kids 'loving it' 'Net Set Go' began yesterday evening and it was a great hit. We had 18 participants but I am urging a few more sign-ups. ESPECIALLY BOYS!! There are not many quality team sport-based programs being offered in the district for children of this age. If you have a child between the ages of 5 - 10 please consider joining up now. We would love a few more boys. Although 'Netball' is traditionally the realm of female athletes there are growing numbers of mixed teams. Also at this age, they are focusing on skills that are easily transferable to other team sports. It is held in the safety of the school and the coach is an ex-student - so what's not to love? The flyer is in this newsletter- please join up!
A HUGE thank you for your co-operation with the Wynstay Road 'Speedy Pick-up' schedule. Leaving the limited spaces for parents with babies and toddlers in car seats has been a very well-received move. So thank you to the rest of the community for parking in the surrounding streets and walking up to the Wynstay Road gates to collect your children.
Lots more to read in this newsletter - so I'll end here!
Hope to see you all on Friday 25th February at The Commons.
Francine

When an incident that worries a child occurs at school the child MUST TELL A STAFF MEMBER STRAIGHT AWAY. This way the matter can be addressed compassionately immediately and resolved at the time. This is a very normal and child-safe way of operating.
What we are experiencing more and more is children happily completing the day at school and then going home and telling parents about something that happened that day (or in some cases many days or weeks after the incident). Parents are then ringing after school or emailing insisting on speaking with teachers about an incident that they have no idea about. The teacher is then unable to investigate what actually happened. By the next day or in fact, sometime later, it is difficult and often impossible to try and gather facts, witnesses and work out any kind of sequence of events.
At school teachers are focussing on the message - TELL US WHEN IT HAPPENS!
We take our child safety measures very seriously and have more than the legal requirement of staff on duty at all times. Your child is never far away from a staff member.
We would like for you as parents to reinforce this message by talking to your child about this and when they tell you about an incident could your first response please be "Did you tell an adult at school about this?"
At this point, masks are still to be worn at all times indoors. This rule means in a school setting students in Grade Three and above must wear masks indoors. (Unless they have an exemption). The government has not provided the school with ongoing supplies of disposable masks and the school cannot afford to supply masks continuously to students. We are asking any parent who would like to, send a box of disposable 'children's masks in for their child's grade to share. Above all please make sure your child is bringing in a mask daily. Thank you.
BREAKING NEWS ...
Earlier today, the Victorian Government announced that existing COVIDSafe measures in schools and early childhood settings would continue until the end of Term 1.
Rapid antigen surveillance testing will continue until the end of Term 1. We are expecting the delivery of rapid antigen tests (RATs) to be delivered in the coming weeks. We will notify parents of pick-up procedures when we receive kits.
The testing settings will remain the same, with all primary school students recommended to test at home twice a week.
Out of School Hours Care - EXTEND
Incidentally, we have a new Extend facilitator operating at OLOL. His name is Leo and he is super sporty and loves playing games with kids.
Early Pick-ups Around Lunchtime
We understand that this is not always possible, but we are asking that if you are picking your child up early from school for an appointment or early departure that you avoid doing this during break times.
Recess 11.00 am - 11.30 am and Lunch 1.30 pm - 2.30pm.
It is very difficult to locate a child on the playground (many times they are across at the park) during these times.
Thank you for your understanding.
Congratulations to all our school leaders for 2022.
We thank Mr Adrian Costa and Miss Alison March for the preparation of the school leadership elections. The Leadership program is one that we take very seriously at OLOL. The 2021 school leaders left some big shoes to fill but, we are very confident the 2022 school leaders will do an amazing job in their leadership roles this year.
