We look forward to seeing the children who will be making their First Eucharist and their families this evening at 7pm. The session will be held in the School Hall.
Thank you to all those who have downloaded the new school app, SZapp. All notifications will come via the app. As of tomorrow, FlexiBuzz will no longer be accessible so you will need the app to report any absences. If you would like support in downloading the app or how it works, please see Irene Archer.
Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in making our Grandparents Day so special. Apart from the enormous amount of positive and heartfelt feedback that we received from the grandparents themselves, one of the most beautiful aspects of the day was how proud and happy the children were to have their grandparents here.
We understand that there were many grandparents that for a variety of reasons were unable to make the day but because of the inclusive nature of the Year 2's beautiful liturgy no body felt left out. We prayed for and thought of those that were with us, those that were sick, those that lived too far away, those that had died and those taking holidays. We were humbled by the effort so many people took to be here for the morning.
There were many comments from the grandparents about how well organised and full the morning was. We can only look that organised when so many people play their part. Miss Ross and the Year 2's have to be commended for presenting a beautiful liturgy; Mrs McGurk for preparing a glimpse of Beauty and the Beast; to the Parents and Friends for providing and organising the morning tea; and to every teacher for hosting the grandparents in their rooms for the morning. It was a a lovely day to be part of; deep and loving, so thank you to everyone involved.
Last term we began to transform the white wall outside the Art room into a bright and colourful Tree Mural. The mural was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s “The Tree of Life” 1905-1909. Our Tree Mural represents that together as a school community, we learn, grow and blossom.
Each student and staff member painted patterns on a DVD disc or vinyl record. After a few hiccups trying to paint the top of the wall, Shanti Gee's family arranged for the wall to be painted by the obliging Ryan (thank you so much Gee family). The tree was then drawn and painted and finally, this term, the beautiful, individual discs were attached.
It is quite a sight to look at and it’s wonderful to see the buzz created around the students looking for their disc or asking others which one they painted.
We must thank our wonderful Art Teacher Luisa Vivarelli for over-seeing and making our beautiful mural come to life.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
A big thanks to all the parents who have offered props, cardboard or assistance for our production. In case I forget to mention it later, I’d like to personally thank:
Necia Wilden, Olivia Hiddlestone, Anthony Dea, I-lynn Lee, Amelia King, Bec Frawley, Annabel Dungey and Lisa (whose last name I can’t find but her gallant efforts to get a TV box to school will go down in history). I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone! There are other parents who have dropped off cardboard too and I apologise for not being able to thank you by name, but they are being turned into barrels, axes and all sorts of props as we speak.
Keep an eye out for our dazzling poster being created by the incredibly talented Di Platt and a brilliant ‘invention’ prop crafted by Mr Adrian ‘Tool Time’ McAlister. Thanks Di and Adrian!
Tickets
Tickets are available now at this link: https://www.trybooking.com/BDMYM. This link can be accessed by family and friends too.
Please note: there is no ramp or lift access to the venue. We apologise in advance for the inconvenience this will cause some community members but are very grateful to have the support of CBC who are allowing us to use their hall.
Thank you for all the support - Ruth McGurk
What a sensational time we had celebrating, counting and creating all things 100!
We started the morning with creative writing in the party room (Granny Gaylor’s classroom). We received $100 from Granny March and recorded what we would spend it on!
Once we finished our creative writing with an appropriate punctuation mark we made colourful crowns! To make sure our super old brains were still working after a long morning, we explored and counted all of the 100 objects that were brought in to school.
After a well-deserved rest, we did some crafty activities with help from Granny Vivarelli. Using all sorts of materials, we created portraits of ourselves as 100-year-olds. Finally we hobbled on stage with our walking sticks to receive our very special certificates and helium balloons!! We had the best day ever!
Week 6 is Book Week. The theme this year is “Reading is My Secret Power”. As we are already asking parents to dress their children up for the concert we will not be having a dress-up event for book week this year. The children will read and complete activities in class in the next few weeks but we will not have a Book Week Day. Mrs Vivarelli has produced a wonderful Book Week display in the hall with lots of artwork around the themes in the Book Week books, please come in and have a look at the beautiful work. - Mary Gammilonghi
Westerhof and Bowker's Baptism
Last Sunday two more school families celebrated their baptisms. We congratulate Leonie, Celeste and Rose Westerhof and Huddy and Coco Bowker as they receive their first Sacrament of Initiation.
Holt District Athletics Carnival
The Year 4 and Year 5/6 classes will be participating in the Holt District Athletics Carnival at the Duncan Mackinnon Reserve Athletics Track, on Thursday the 29th of August.
Students will participate in track and field events that they have been placed in according to age group and results achieved during athletics practice in PE lessons. They will need to wear their sports uniform and bring their school bag with lunch and water bottle.
This note was sent out earlier this week, please remember to return it by next Monday 12th August. Thank you.
Last week the year 5 and 6 students, full of excitement headed off to Harrietville for their Snow Camp. They were full of beans singing songs on the bus for the first couple hours before stopping to eat morning tea in Euroa.
After the Euroa stop, Mr Costa put on Cool Runnings for the kids to watch and get some inspiration for their tobogganing trip. The next stop was at the Red Stag Deer Farm where we got to enjoy a nice lunch together before feeding some cute animals. Some of the kids were nervous to feed the giant deers especially as Grace (the owner) let them know to be careful as the antlers can poke them. Forty minutes down the road was our final destination, Feathertop Chalet. After we dumped bags into rooms, we and headed straight out to the giant swing. Sharni, Tom, Ben, India, Alexandra, Olivia, Juana, and Sophie were all nervous to give it a go but they built up the courage and did it. Afterwards, they were all eager to do it again. After dinner, and back outside we played torch tiggy and learnt about the solar system while looking up at the sky.
The next morning everybody woke up ready to have breakfast and make the hour trek up the hill to Dinner Plain. Upon arrival, the students raced off the bus and immediately jumped into the snow and made snow angels. Miss Jackson helped Olivia and Elizabeth make a toboggan run in between the trees, while Mr Costa was having a snowball fight with Victoria, Rupert, Ben, Tom and India. The children picked up their toboggans and set off over to the toboggan run for their first race of the day. At the end of the day, a tired bunch boarded the bus to head back down to camp. Many fell asleep along the windy road while others clenched to their seats trying not to vomit. Shortly after we got back from the snow Mrs Walsh and Fr Hayes arrived. Before dinner, Fr. Hayes celebrated an intimate Mass in the chalet dining room.
After dinner, the students put on their pyjamas and grabbed their sleeping bags and heading into the conference room for a viewing of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. A couple of kids struggled to stay awake while others hopped into their popcorn and lollies.
On the final day of camp, the campers struggled to get up but found some energy somewhere for the waiting Mountain biking and high ropes activities. Mr McAlister rode with the students down to the lake with a couple of kids falling off their bikes onto the soft grass. Meanwhile, Jack was having the time of his life at the high ropes helping some of the smaller kids across the tricky course. By lunch, the kids were ready to head home. The Mighty Ducks and McDonald’s were the highlights of the four and a half hour trip back to OLOL. “Thank you” and “That was an awesome camp” were said by many of the students as they disembarked off the bus for the final time. Mr McAlister
First Eucharist Whole School Mass
The First Eucharist (Holy Communion) will be celebrated on Sunday 25th August at 11.00am. This is also our family school Mass for Term 3. Therefore it would be wonderful to see all of our parents and children from the school community attending this Mass. The Year 1 and 2 families will be hosting morning tea. We look forward to seeing you all there.
