The winning quote from the feedback Survey responses for me has to be this quote:
I think it is about doing a few things a day rather than everything that might have been requested. We almost treat the daily instructions like a menu we can select a 'balanced diet' from. That is seriously a great philosophy.
Also a winner but keep in mind from the parent of a Year 6 student ...
This remote learning is so unlike anything we have ever done. Our experience has been exactly like the following: ***** gets herself up and has breakfast, she checks her daily requirements and begins her work - all independently. She completes each task & uploads it. Again, independently. My feeling is that she would not be able to do this at all ever, had she not been fully prepared by her excellent teacher before remote learning was even a consideration. We as parents check-in with her & offer suggestions ( mostly to add more detail, or please edit your work, or wow that’s fantastic.) We are so impressed with the variety of work & the variety of platforms to complete the work. Remote Learning at Team **** has been stress-free. Thank you OLOL
And many comments similar to the following two:
Thank you so much ****, ****** & all the wonderful OLOL staff for working so hard for children... we have always appreciated you but have a newfound respect and admiration for what you do. X
Thank you for all the work you have put into preparing online learning. We are truly grateful for your dedication.
So thank you all. We will issue a further survey at the end of next week.
Regards
Francine
We are very pleased to announce we have booked an
Online Parent Information Session with Hugh
on Wednesday 27th May at 7.00pm
Our programs are based on the following strategies:
Gratitude - Appreciating what you have, not begrudging what you don’t.
Empathy - Thinking of the needs of others/kindness.
Mindfulness - Being present in the moment, not becoming distracted by unhelpful or negative thoughts.
During this presentation, Hugh will share his experiences and combine them with practical strategies that can be implemented everyday to improve our overall wellbeing.
Many Thanks,
Angelique Gabriel
Last week the student leaders had a meeting regarding the OLOL Spirit and how they/we can keep the spirit alive from the comfort of our homes. They came up with some brilliant ideas for this. They have decided that they will organise a range of different competitions that the students and families can do together at home.
There will be three different competitions in total over the next few weeks. The first competition will be a 'Bake Off!'. For students and families to enter they need to bake some sort of cake, biscuit, dessert, etc, take a photo of it, and email the pics to Mr. Mac. (adrian.mcalister@olprahraneast.catholic.edu.au)
They need to get these pics to Mr. Mac by next Friday 8th May. You should see the prize! It is valued at over $60.00! and includes:
Premier's Reading Challenge 2020 is Now Open!
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Our Lady of Lourdes is excited to be participating.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 4 September 2020.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
I have registered all students enrolled at OLOL if you are interested in participating please email me:
anne.vella@olprahraneast.catholic.edu.au
I will send you your username and password.
I understand that it is a difficult time and trips to the library or bookstore may not be possible. Here are some tips to share with your students to help them read more:
- Re-read favourite books from your home collection.
- Borrow eBooks from your local library.
- For young children, search YouTube for 'read a picture book', and listen to dozens of children's books like The Lorax, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Rainbow Fish.
- Watch your favourite authors read their books at The Big List of Children’s Authors Doing Online Read Alouds and Activities.
- Watch astronauts on the Space Station read children's books at Storytime from Space.
- Stream videos of authors reading children's books with illustrations at Storyline Online.
- Listen to a David Walliams audio book.
- Download a free classic children's or young adult's book from International Children's Digital Library or net.
Reading is more important than ever to develop literacy skills. I hope all students have fun exploring the wider world and new exciting places without leaving their living rooms. For more information, visit the: the PRC website
Any queries or concerns please contact me.
Happy Reading
Anne Vella
As only our infant levels get to see the brilliant organisation of this - I wanted to share it with you all. As the hall is currently out of action the Foundation and Year One Take-Home Packs were distributed from the art room.
We took this opportunity to also distribute Scholastic Bookclub Books and Easter Raffle Prizes.
It has worked like clockwork. Parents duck up the side entrances, we have the art room doors wide open and a hand sanitiser point. Packs are in alphabetical order, Year levels are in different colours and readers have a special drop off point. It is fabulous to behold! This is in operation today and tomorrow - all details on pick-up etiquette have been supplied via SZapp to the Foundation and Year One levels as this is only for the infant grades.
Our ESO's have been exceptional during our remote learning experience working like an army of ants to pull together so many unseen aspects of OLOL in lock-down. I need to acknowledge them, they have been obliging, flexible, available, and exceptional and we love you!
We are currently concentrating on next year's Foundation enrolments and we need your help spreading the word amongst your friends and family. We are running online information sessions to replace Open Days. The flyer for these has been sent to all local kindergartens but I'm not getting very much response. Therefore I'm asking you to look at the PDF attached, watch the film and see what we are offering and then spread the word that OLOL 2021 is open for business!
To all of our existing parents, if you are intending for your child to be enrolled in the 2021 Foundation class and haven't yet completed an enrolment form, would you please contact the office and we will email or post one out.
The authors of the newsletter would like to apologise for a mistake in last week's newsletter. The authors wrote 'wear-with-all' instead of the correct and proper 'where-with-all'. The authors are grateful to the community for correcting this mistake and hope we can now move forward in a spirit of forgiveness and correct grammaticness. The author would also like to acknowledge at this point that the 'Spelling Fairy' failed to show at her baptism and therefore this gift was never bestowed.
