Christmas Masses at Our Lady of Lourdes
Welcome Mass for 2020 Foundation Families
It was lovely to begin Advent with our Welcome Mass for next year’s Foundation students. I thank all the parents that came to the Mass which demonstrated our community spirit beautifully. We need to thank in particular our sensational Foundation and Year 1 parents who hosted the very yummy morning tea, packed up, cleaned up and were their general all-round-good-selves. A special thank you to Lisa Shaw and Sarah Shanahan for the exquisitely made 'Welcome to OLOL' cookies. We also need to acknowledge our brilliant Infant team. I was so proud of all the students on Sunday. The reading, the behaviour and the beautiful singing all take an extreme level of commitment and care so we thank their wonderful teachers. Thank you too, Miss Archer, who slogs away behind the scenes ensuring that all our Whole School Masses are not only holy and reverent but they go off without a hitch. Thank you, everyone, it is greatly appreciated.
We are asking that you all support one final fund raising effort organised by our wonderful P&F.
We have a sensational Deluxe Christmas Hamper Raffle. It is full of posh produce and exciting Christmas fare. There is champagne and pudding, biscuits and condiments and all sorts of goodies. The hamper is valued at well over $300.00!
We also have a second prize of a beautiful Kate Hill Orchid and a Kate Hill very Chrismassy Poinsetta Plant for third prize. But the Deluxe Hamper is really what you want. It will sort all your Christmas needs.
Each family has received a raffle book. The tickets are $5.00 each and $50.00 for the book.
We ask that each family sells a book and there are more available at the office to improve your chances of winning this fabulous raffle.
The tickets are due back to school by 10 December.
The DELUXE CHRISTMAS RAFFLE will be drawn at the End of Year Disco - 12 December 2019.
A new device has appeared on the scene 'Vtech watches'. These are essentially a smartphone type watch and as such can do almost anything. The elements we are most concerned about however are the camera, recording and video aspects of these watches. It is completely unsafe to have these devices at school. As you know we have a NO PHONE rule at OLOL. Some senior students do carry a phone in their bags as a safety device for when they are walking home by themselves. These phones do not appear out at school or school events at all. If they do they are confiscated and parents and the school make arrangements to have them collected. I am afraid the same phone rules will have to apply to the Vtech watches. We had a brief assembly this morning where this was raised and the students were most understanding about why these rules are in place. If you have any questions about this please just let me know.
What a spectacular success!!
Those lucky enough to make it up to the top yard last Friday were rewarded by seeing and being part of the amazing first ever 'OLOL Produce Market'.
Our committed Garden Club, Miss Jackson and Miss Rosie raised over $200.00 for Food For Friends by selling the products of their gardening. This consisted of our entire potato crop and a variety of herbs.
The market was generously augmented by several parents who supplemented the produce from their own gardens including lemons, more herbs and potted plants.
The weather cleared just in time and it was an altogether lovely experience. Thank you everyone involved.
Thank you to Marita Callanan, Lisa Collison and Jenny Jackson who supervised our Year 5 and 6 students during our OLOL 'Food for Friends' sessions down at Hawksburn Woolworths last Thursday and Vilay Hogan, Amelia King, Bhavika Singh and Marita Callanan for supervising our students down there yesterday. By all accounts, our Seniors were exceptional and were able to gather trollies full of donations for those less fortunate in our community.
Thank you to the Bergamin, Gentile, Dowd, Lambrou, Tulloch, Borg, Belleville and Burke families who all volunteered last weekend to support the appeal. All the best to the Grant, Wilden, Southwood, Collinson and Hely families who are 'on duty' this weekend!
I cannot express how wonderful the feedback we receive from both customers and families 'manning' the trollies. The parents of our students who involve themselves can't speak highly enough of the opportunity it provides. This year we have had 17 families support the appeal it is our hope that every year as our community comes to expect this opportunity at the end of the year and start making allowances for it in their busy schedules that more and more families will become involved in this important social justice action.
On a personal level, I thank all at OLOL Primary School for the amazing contribution to the Food for Friends for 2019 as well as last year. The children/teachers/parents' involvement has been a wonderful addition and the feedback has all been positive. The children’s behaviour has been widely acknowledged. A great compliment to OLOL Principal, Staff pupils and parents. Speaks volumes of the spirit that exists at the school.
Carols, Graduation and End of Year Disco
A reminder that next Thursday 12th December is the whole school celebration incorporating Christmas Carols, Year 6 Graduation Ceremony and End of Year Disco.
The evening will begin in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 6:00pm. The Carols and Graduation Ceremony will be followed by the Disco at the school. All students will be part of this event so please save the date.
ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE CAROLS AND GRADUATION.
On Tuesday 17th December, we are all going to journey down to the Prahran Pool for a big fun morning of swimming and generally getting wet. For safety sake, we have completely booked out the pool so that you can bring all toddlers and babies and come down and join us. We will then walk back to school via Victoria Park where we will have lunch together. The children will be asked to bring their lunch in disposable wrapping on that day with their name clearly written on the outside, as lunches will be transported separately to the park.
We absolutely need as many parents as possible to accompany us. Toddlers are welcome to join us. We need parents to walk with us and/or parents to meet us at the pool. The more eyes on the pool the safer we all are.
Children are to wear their sports uniform to school on the day with their swimmers/bathers underneath. Please remember to pack a towel, sunscreen, drink bottle and underwear for them to change into afterward.
Clever Alumni - Chelsea Le Hunt
The establishment of the ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award is an important initiative by the Australian Government designed to encourage senior students, tomorrow’s leaders, to actively participate in the life of their school and the local community. It recognises a student who has demonstrated leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader community and who displays strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others and “mateship”, that are integral to Australian society.
Chelsea Le Hunt who attended OLOL from Prep in 2009 to Year six in 2015 was this year's Year 10 recipient of this award. Her school said 'she has distinguished herself in a range of ways and hence is the recipient of this prestigious and generous award. It recognises her leadership in so many areas of Presentation life and is a very proud Presentation woman.'
OLOL congratulate Chelsea on this award.

As many of our classes for next year happen to be 'straight' classes you are already aware of who is in your child's class. We will be Zsapping out the year F/1 classes and teachers tomorrow.
There has been a reported case of head lice in the Year 4/5 class this week, therefore I would ask that all parents examine their child’s hair for signs of lice infestation. These usually first appear as eggs or nits, tiny silvery white specks attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.
If you find eggs in your child’s hair please treat immediately and do not send your child back to school until the eggs have been removed as well as treated.
Please note that you do need to check the hair for any eggs and remove them either by using the supplied comb or by pulling the egg off the hair strand with your finger nails.
Please make sure that you do regular checks on your child’s hair. If eggs are left, the lice will reinfest. It is also advisable to retreat the hair 7 days after the first treatment. It is also very important for all girls with long hair to wear it tied back.
One wonderful and considerate mother has sent me this product for your information. “I just wanted to share with you the details of the product I had talked about, as I find it very clever for our children’s heads”
