During the September break, I attended a two-week course on Comparative Theology, Scriptural Reasoning and Eucharistic Welcome at the VU University in Amsterdam. The focus of the study was on being Catholic in an increasingly secular and pluralist world. We have an opportunity this term, with our multi-cultural study to explore some other world faiths. The infant grades will be taking a looking at the Greek Orthodox Church, middle school at Buddhism and the senior school Hinduism. As this is a very cursory look at these faiths we will be focusing on the use of candles and the symbolism of light in each of these religions. It is envisioned that in learning about other faiths, our own Catholic Identity will be strengthened.
There is all sorts of information in this newsletter regarding the term ahead. I love the fourth term for all sorts of reasons apart from the fact that it ends in a great big holiday. I love the weather, the Arts, the sports, the learning, the orientation of next years foundation students, the graduation of our fabulous year sixes. I love Advent and Christmas ... bring it on!
For a number of years, the student toilet block has needed a complete refurbishment. The cold dark brown floor tiles, brown brick walls, silver taps and sink from the 1970s and paint peeling doors have made the toilets look dingy and outdated. The builders have been working around the clock during the school holidays to get both the boys and girls bathrooms completed by next week. Just in case you have never seen the toilets or have forgotten what they look like, here are some before photos. You will have to wait until the next newsletter to see the after photos, trust me you will want to see what it looks like completed.
Discovery Garden Seedling Kits
The Garden Club and Signora Gleeson are currently collecting the Discovery Garden Seedling Kits from Woolworths. Like the "Earn and Learn" stickers, you receive one seedling kit for every $30 you spend at Woolworths. Please bring these in as the more kits we have the more successful our planting will be.
The promotion runs until 22nd October so we need your help collecting as many seedling kits as we can!
Swim Squad is open to students in Years 2-6 who can swim 50m independently. The Swim Squad is a training squad only, NOT swimming lessons.
Swim Squad training for the 2020 Holt Swimming Carnival begins on Wednesday 27th November at 7am at the Prahran Swimming Pool. Training will continue for the following two Wednesdays (4th and 11th December) and then recommence in Term 1, 2020 in preparation for the HOLT Sports District Swimming Carnival. The dates for Swim Squad training in Term 1 are the 5th, 12th and 19th February.
The total cost of Swim Squad is $70.00. The payment can be made in full or in two instalments of $35.00, however money must be received prior to the commencement of Swim Squad each term. This fee covers lane hire and breakfast as well as contributing toward the bus to the Carnival.
We will be travelling by tram together at the conclusion of training back to school. No child is to return to school independently by car. Students will need to bring a Myki card (with credit on it) for the tram.
We will be offering breakfast upon returning to school as long as we have parents committed to the preparation and serving of the food. If we do not receive enough parent support for the valued and enjoyed breakfast program, we will need to reconsider this aspect of the program.
Swim Squad training is not a guarantee of qualifying to compete in the Holt Swimming Carnival. Schools have to follow a code of entry levels for events and so OLOL students who reach the appropriate level will be in a position to compete.
Swim Squad training is however a great opportunity to strengthen your child's swimming ability as well as adding to their wellbeing, so we encourage participation regardless of qualifying for the carnival.
Students in Years 2-6 have been sent an information letter and permission slip via SZapp and is also attached here. Could parents please sign and submit them back by Friday 18th October.
The children's artwork will be displayed for everyone to enjoy on FRIDAY 25th OCTOBER. The evening will run from 6.00pm - 8.00pm. Family ticket price is $12.00, available ONLINE (a trybooking link will be sent out early next term). There will be drinks and food available to purchase on the evening. Each class produces an artwork to be auctioned on the evening this produces much needed funds for our Arts program. The auction will take place at 7.10pm. The Art Show is a celebration of the childrens’ artwork from across the year. As always the money raised from the Art Show (which includes the door price of $12.00 a family) goes to support all the art initiatives in the school. It even helps subsidise the concert! We appreciate your support of the high-quality Art projects that take place at OLOL.
We thank our P and F for hosting the event and look forward to seeing all our families at this special evening.
On Tuesday 29th October students are invited to dress in clothing that reflects their cultural background or a culture of their choice. All parents, carers and families are invited to attend our Multicultural Parade on Tuesday 29th at 9.00 am - 9.30 am in the hall.
The students will have the opportunity to buy multicultural food on the day. For $10.00 students will receive a freshly baked croissant for recess (GF option available) and 1 Vietnamese chicken roll and 1 Vietnamese avocado rice paper roll for lunch.
For ease of organisation, there will be no variation on this order. Students do not have to participate in the lunch, but if they would like to order lunch please send $10.00 to school with your child by Friday 18th October.
Students will be participating in a range of activities including African drumming, Greek ‘Zorba’ dancing, Diwali candle pot making, Bollywood dancing, Chinese lantern making, Japanese origami and a digital world tour.
We look forward to a day abuzz with activity and vibrant costumes which will reflect our school’s sense of belonging for everyone. It will acknowledge that our cultural diversity is one of our greatest assets and we are stronger for it.
Term 4 - 'No Hat, Shaded Area'
Please remember that Term 4 means time to start wearing hats again on the playground. The school sun policy is “No Hat, Shaded Area”. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their hat each day! Please also ensure that your child’s hat has their name clearly marked on it.
If your child has lost their hat, they can be purchased from the office for $15.00.
Any parents who kindly lent snow gear to the Year 5 and 6 children last term can collect it from the school office. Thank you.
